Chapter Nine

He looked at her with an intensity that seemed to pierce through her, holding her in place as effectively as an anchor against a powerful undertow. His gaze was like a relentless current, pulling her into the depths of his emotions. She felt herself caught in the grip of his captivating stare, unable to escape its grasp. His brown eyes, flecked with glints of gold, had her fumbling to remember why she shouldn't.

Despite her internal protests, before she could think twice, she heard herself saying “Yes”.

His answering smile was nothing short of dazzling. “I'll be waiting for you right outside your door in one hour.”

She thought about that smile the entire swim back to the Palace with Proteus. She barely recognized his departure when she closed her door only to find Aquata lounging on the couch in her room. Finn rested contently nearby on the floor.

As the second triplet, Aquata wasn't particularly close with Theia, but they shared a bond all the same. Aquata understood what it was like to be in the shadow to the first born.

“Do you need something?” Theia asked. “I don't have a lot of time.”

Aquata pulled an imaginary piece of lint off of a white scale at the top of her hip. The same hip where Theia and all six of her sisters had gotten a rune in honor of their mother. A small seahorse outline, their mother's favorite animal, no bigger than her thumb.

“Cora asked me to make your jewelry for the dinner party next week.”

“I'm sure whatever you come up with will be great.” Theia moved towards her bedroom and Aquata followed. In her bedroom Theia set her bag and the trident on her bed. “You always make such beautiful things.”

From behind her Aquata confidently said, “I know.”

Theia laughed and turned to see Aquata in the doorway of her closet. “You're so humble.”

Waving a hand dismissively Aquata entered the closet. “I really wish you'd let me pick things out for you. Everything in here is so plain.”

Theia shook her head and pulled a shimmery copper top that matched her scales from off a hanger. “Do you think this would be good for dinner?”

Aquata gasped and whirled around to look. “You have a date! You only care about how you look when it's a date. Who is it?”

“I do not only care about my appearance when it comes to dating. I don't even remember the last time I went on a date.”

“Save us both the trouble and tell me.” Aquata put both hands on her hips. “Or I'll get Alea in here to get it out of you.”

Sighing in defeat, Theia said, “Commander Calder.”

Aquata grinned. “Alea said he's the most handsome merman she's ever seen.”

“Alea says a lot of things,” Theia mumbled and put the garment back.

Aquata helped Theia pick out what to wear for her date. They debated back and forth until settling on the orange top Theia had picked out originally. Theia quickly polished her scales and scrubbed the rune ink from teaching all day off her hands.
